The Family Nurse Partnership is an intensive preventative home visiting programme delivered by specially trained nurses and midwives who have experience of working with families in the community. It is a structured programme offered to first time, young parents from early pregnancy until the child is two-years-old. Pregnancy and birth provide the window of opportunity when most families are highly receptive to support and extra help. The benefits are improvements in women's health, reductions in child injuries, fewer subsequent births, increased father involvement, babies becoming more securely attached to their parents and increasing the child's readiness for school. In Manchester, the Partnership is funded by NHS Manchester and the Department of Health. It is being extensively evaluated and a research trial is about to commence to test how well it works.
