msp CEO Nominated as Chairman of Manchester Innovation Group


Jane Davies, CEO of Manchester Science Parks (msp), has been nominated as Chairman of the Manchester Innovation Group, which merges the Manchester: KnowledgeCapital (M:KC) board and the Commission for the New Economy’s Innovation SubGroup.

The appointment underlines how msp is seen as being central to the innovation system of Manchester City Region.

The new body will oversee innovation strategy and policy for the city-region and secure its implementation. The move is a reflection of the growing importance of innovation as part of the overarching Greater Manchester Strategy.

The primary objectives of the group are to guide the development and implementation of innovation across the city region, to continue to promote Manchesteras a knowledge city and to increase the rate of innovation and knowledge based activity to drive Manchesterforward as a global Innovation hub.

Membership of the new group will include representatives of both private and public sector organisations and universities from the existing groups.

Both organisations will retain their current management structures and continue their day-to-day roles.

Mike Emmerich, CEO of the Commission for the New Economy said: “This is a very positive development and another example of the City Region pooling its talents to benefit all. The merging of the two groups will bring the city region's leadership on innovation policy into one area to expand and diversify the city region’s economic base and thereby support our economic growth ambitions.”

Manchester's Commission for the New Economy has been established to strategically co-ordinate the work in the field of economic development,employment and skills in the area of the ten AGMA Local Authorities (the Association for Greater Manchester Authorities, made up of the local authorities of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport,Tameside, Trafford and Wigan).

The Commission for the New Economy is one of seven such commissions created as part of the new governance arrangements for Greater Manchester recently ratified by its ten component authorities. Its operations are overseen by a private sector-majority board chaired by Mike Blackburn of BT, which includes most of the AGMA authority leaders. The others are health, public protection, planning and housing, transport, environment and improvement and efficiency.
