MEN Business Editor visits msp

Manchester Evening News (MEN) Business Editor, Kevin Feddy, recently visited msp to provide tenants with advice on getting media exposure withinthe MEN.

Feddy advised the attendees that the business pages of the MEN are not just a dry collection of facts and figures, but a chance for readers to hear the stories behind the company names - about people, ideas and innovative approaches to business.

While the business pages have the biggest spread on Thursdays, with sections dedicated to different sectors, there is a business update every day. He noted that these days they are more likely to break a story first on the MEN website before putting it into the next available print edition.

He advised that for maximum, and appropriate, coverage, you need to consider when you send your news over – for example getting your information over before midday means that you have a better chance of getting in the next day’s paper. Also, as the Thursday edition has more business coverage, it might be better to wait or embargo news until then.

He added that SMEs are of just as much interest to the business section as listed companies, as SMEs are often better at reacting quickly to market conditions. As such, there is a lot of space now dedicated to covering those kind of ‘up and coming’ companies, including:

Enterprise: Thursday edition, a two page spread on regional SME activity. News from SMEs on the following topics is of particular interest:

  • International business / export
  • Low carbon / green technology
  • Innovation
  • Technology / Biotech

Other areas that tenants could contribute to include:

  • Commercial Property: lettings, office products, architectural design
  • Media: media and digital agency news, contract wins, new projects
  • Professional: News from, or to do with, professional service providers, e.g. lawyers, accountants
  • The Jury: Every week a topical business question you can submit your opinion on
  • The (Business) Diary: The quirky, human interest side of business

There are also regular business and individual profile pieces.

One important point for msp tenants to consider is that the readership of the MEN (and other business publications) is very broad, so too much technical detail and jargon is not advisable. Instead, concentrate on detailing the benefits your company / service / product can offer to your target market in a clear, concise manner.
