Manchester data centre Melbourne, which is based at mspTechnopark, picked up the Big Green Chip Award for its Green Initiative entry at the recent 2009 Big Chip Awards.
The company, which is to launch a new 3,000-server data centre over coming weeks, was recognised at the annual awards for the host of environmental policies it has initiated over the past two years.
This includes implementation of virtualisation and cool aisle containment as well as switching to low-power servers for all dedicated servers, which use approximately 25 per cent less power than their predecessors.
A new two-year energy deal with E.ON valued at approximately £250,000 further proves Melbourne’s green commitment; the deal is a green/renewable supply and will cost the data centre significantly more than its current energy tariff.
Daniel Foster, Managing Director of Melbourne, commented: “Data centres are always going to be energy hungry but we still must prove we are doing everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint.”
In addition to winning the Big Green Chip Award, Melbourne has been nominated as one of the Best Dedicated Hosting finalists at this year’s ISPA Awards and Daniel has been selected as one of Crain’s Manchester Business’ 40 under 40, a prestigious annual list of 40 people who have achieved success in business before turning 40.
