The UK Science Park Association, led by Chairman Jane Davies, was a member of the World Nominating Committee for the first ever Global Entrepreneurship Competition, which takes place at the ‘HiTBarcelona’09’ World Innovation Summit this week (June 17th to 19th).
The contest is a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting great business ideas and bringing together entrepreneurs with an audience that includes private investors, business angels, venture capital firms and managers of public and private funds.
Just 24 international companies are taking part in the competition final at HiT Barcelona after being nominated by the World Nominating Committee, which was made up of 24 entrepreneurship centres from around the globe.
Each centre invited applications for the competition from innovative companies in their home country, whittling the list of entrants down to one finalist each to go forward to the Global Entrepreneurship Competition at ‘HiTBarcelona’09’.
The UK Science Park Association (UKSPA) nominated Grangemouth-based company Surface Active Solutions, which has developed microemulsion based technology to aid in the prevention and management of drilling waste.
Ms Davies, who is also CEO of Manchester Science Parks (msp), commented: “All of the entrants UKSPA received were of an exceptionally high standard and we had difficulty in choosing just one to go forward to Barcelona.
“We decided to nominate Surface Active Solutions as it is a company with a global resonance; in addition the technology it has developed has both commercial potential as well as environmental benefits and, as we all know, the green agenda is one of the leading issues in business today.”
In addition to the 24 international entrants, four Spanish start-ups have been selected from two entrepreneurship programs in Spain, bringing to 28 the total number of contestants who will be presenting their business plan at ‘HiTBarcelona’09’.
