150 pints of blood donated at msp

Blood donors at msp donated 150 pints of blood for the 2007/08 year - and the Science Park has the certificate to prove it.

Stephen Brooks Johnson (pictured), a member of msp’s security team, regularly organises National Blood Service sessions at the Science Park, providing everyone on the Park with an opportunity to donate blood to help those in need.

Blood donated by volunteers can be used in any number of ways, for example red blood cells are used to treat all kinds of anaemia which can't be medically corrected as well as replacing red cells lost in accidents, surgery or childbirth while platelets from blood are of huge benefit in post transplant and chemotherapy treatments.

For some people, whose illness has no cure, a blood transfusion can also help to improve their quality of life during their final months, weeks or even days.

The Certificate of Blood Donation from the National Blood Service is thanking everyone at msp who has helped to save lives by giving blood and it will be on display in msp’s Cafe on the Park.

Stephen, who began organising blood donations sessions at msp in 2007, pointed out that msp was awarded the certificate because it was above target for blood donations and he encouraged anyone interested in donating blood to come along to the next session, which will be advertised on mspcircuit.

He added that as donated blood is rarely used in its whole format but is instead split up into components, msp's 150 pints of blood had the potential to help an estimated 450 patients.
