New application will boost smartphone battery

A new mobile phone application which can extend the battery life of a smartphone by up to 30 per cent has been launched by Manchester based software development company, Ravensoft UK.

Compatible with Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices, Ravensoft’s Battery Extender application extends a mobile phone’s standby time (time between charges) by automatically managing power draining applications and features such as Bluetooth, GPS and screen brightness.

According to Dr Chris Byrne, Ravensoft’s Head of Operations and Strategy for the UK, research by the company has shown that a phone with a typical battery life of four days can have its battery life extended by over 25 hours simply by using the Battery Extender application.

Dr Byrne explained: “Features such as Bluetooth and GPS can be a heavy drain on battery power, especially if you forget to turn them off when you are no longer using them.

“Our solution works by automatically switching off these features as the battery level drops as well as adjusting phone settings, for example reducing the screen brightness, to lessen the power drain on the phone’s battery.

“The overall result is that the battery lasts longer between charges and, if you are away for a few days and have forgotten your charger, you can keep your phone working for longer simply by switching to maximum power savings,” he stated.

The Battery Extender has been developed in-house by Ravensoft UK, which is based at Manchester Science Park and is a subsidiary of Finnish software development company, Ravensoft Ltd.

Ravensoft UK plan to dual brand their Battery Extender solution รข€“ the initial launch will be aimed at the consumer market with a second, corporate version launched later in the year.

Although aware the economic climate is not ideal for launching a new product, Dr Byrne pointed out that with 139.3 million smartphones sold worldwide in 2008*, the Battery Extender’s sales potential is huge.

“The smartphone is becoming a part of everyday life for everything from surfing the web to playing music and the more we rely on our mobiles, the more crucial the phone’s battery life is,” continued Dr Byrne.

“Having received a positive response on beta testing Battery Extender, we can see there is a need for a product that increases smartphone battery life between charges.

“Our Battery Extender is a relatively low cost application, it fills that niche in the market and so far we have not seen any other product that works in the same way so we are hopeful it will be successful,” Dr Byrne concluded.
