2009 Manchester School of Excellence

The Manchester School of Excellence was very successfully launched last year. It is a programme put together by Venture Point Ltd, Manchester City Council and Education Business Solutions. The School of Excellence is also supported by The Manchester College. It is a summer programme designed to give a group of Manchester’s brightest 16 year olds the opportunity to get some real work experience at the city’s top employers. The programme is aimed at students who have just completed their GCSEs and are moving onto A-Levels.

Twenty students participated in the first School last year and it was such a success that 3 Schools of twenty students each are being run this summer. The timing of the programme will be such that it will provide participants with an excellent platform to begin their A-Levels. The School will encourage participants to raise their aspirations and give them practical guidance on making the most of the next two years. The 2009 programme will last four weeks and two of those will be spent on work placement. Each participant will be assigned to a company for 2 weeks. Placements will be organised so that each participant has a defined task to complete over the course of two weeks. He or she will have someone within the company assigned to them, to oversee their tasks and to complete a report at the end of the 2 week period. This will provide the student and the School with valuable feedback.

Every effort will be made to match each student with a company in the sector that interests them so that the student and the company both gain from the placement.

If you would like to participate in this year’s School or request more information, please contact Aoife Middlemass on 0161 918 6713 or email a.middlemass@venturepoint.co.uk.

You may choose more than one student and also more than one set of dates on which to take placements.

I hope you will consider being part of this summer’s School of Excellence. Although it does not provide a formal accreditation, we think the programme will enable students to improve their personal development and team building skills, to learn more about the world of work and enterprise and to find out more about education and career opportunities post 18.
